Finding and Repairing Roof Leaks

If you see water stains across your ceiling, then you most probably have a leaky roof. While repairing roof leaks is easy, tracking down the leak is the hard part. Our licensed contractors summed up these tips on how you can easily find roof leaks and give them first aid repairs before calling the professionals.

Finding the Leak

When you’re trying to track down a leak, start by looking at the roof uphill from the stains. If you have access to your attic, the easiest way to find a leak is to look for water stains, black marks, or molds. However, if you have a vaulted ceiling, you’ll have to go up onto the roof to do the actual examination.
Look for any sign of roof penetrations as they are the most common source of leaks. Penetrations include plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, dormers, or anything else that projects through the roof.

Some leaks, however, are harder to find than the others. If that’s the case, you may want to seek help from other people. Go up the roof with a garden hose, start low by soaking the area just above where the leak appears in the house. Have another person stay inside the house waiting for the drip to appear. Let the hose run for several minutes in one area before moving to another one.

There are times when running water doesn’t reveal the exact location of the leak. What you can do is remove shingles in the suspected area. Look for evidence of the leak such as discolored felt paper or water-stained or even rotted wood directly below and around a leaky roof.

Repairing the Leak

Once you find the leak, immediately fix it. Over time, even small leaks can lead to big problems such as molds, rotted framing and sheathing, destroyed insulation, and damaged ceilings.
