Choosing Asphalt Shingles

Thinking of replacing your roof with asphalt shingles? That may be one of the best decisions in your home renovation project. Asphalt shingles are one of the least expensive roofing materials, available in a wide variety of colors, and very easy to install.

There are two main types of asphalt shingles: organic and fiberglass. Organic shingles are made up of paper with an asphalt coating that converts them into a ‘waterproof’ product. Fiberglass Shingles, on the other hand, provides better fire protection than organic ones. Both are treated with a protective resin coating that converts them into ‘waterproof’ material. They can also be bonded with a special sealant – to make two-layered architectural shingles – that adds an eye-appealing visual effect to the roof.

Shingles are generally inexpensive and can be acquired and install very easily. A bundle of shingles will cost about $30 plus tax. Still, you must consult a professional installer for more accurate estimates. The price of shingles may vary per square (an industry term defined as 100 square feet) and type. For instance, cedar shingles can cost as much as $300 per square so be aware when estimating that not all costs are the same. Professional fees also add to the difference in prices. Some contractors can charge somewhere in between $3.25 to $4.25 per square feet all in, material and labor.
